I’ve just come back from a nice little trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland where I attended Build, a week-long design festival for makers of digital stuff.
Multidisciplinary Design
Awesome! I just noticed that the german ride sharing community “mifahrgelegenheit.de” has launched their UK site rideshare.co.uk.
Why is this awesome? Ride sharing is something I’ve been very enthusiastic about since my experience of it in Germany. Whether environmentally conscious travellers, students on low-budget weekend trips home or people who just don’t like travelling alone, ride sharing is the transport of choice. How does it work? In their own words:
Lift sharing is basically organised hitchhiking where a driver offers a lift to passengers, generally in return for a contribution towards petrol. It can save people hundreds of pounds per year, and even helps save the environment, and reduces congestion on the roads.
Similar to the popular couch surfing, ride sharing is not only about saving money (although you do save a great deal compared to other means of transport), it’s also about the people you share your journey with. I’ve met some really interesting people and had a lot of great conversations using the service and it has saved me a great deal of money. I’ve always missed a ride sharing service like this in the UK but the wait is finally over, hurrah!
Obviously this only works if enough people know about the benefits. This is why I share my excitement with you and urge anyone to spread the word and give it a go. I hope that rideshare.co.uk will really take off in the UK and become as popular as it is in Germany. It’s a truly awesome thing!
